    Katie Smith

I had the privilege of working with Zhe during the UCI MCS capstone collaboration with Humma.AI, Inc., a Public Benefit Corp, where his technical expertise and leadership were foundational to our initial prototype. As CEO and co-founder, I oversaw strategy with the team, and Zhe turned the vision into execution by designing the system architecture and database schema, managing the codebase through thoughtful reviews, distributing tasks effectively, and building key features, including the posts functionality with infinite scrolling and the AI chat page. He combines deep technical skill with collaborative leadership, a rare talent who strengthens both product and team.

Experience

  1. Software Engineer Intern

    January 2025 — Present

    • Led the end-to-end architecture design of SimGenie, an AI-driven web application that transforms natural language into interactive XR simulations. Built the frontend with Next.js and the backend with FastAPI, leveraging AWS services for media storage, chat history, and user metadata.

    • Engineered seamless integration with the HyperSkill simulation platform by developing production ready RESTful APIs to communicate with the backend simulation engine, enabling automated translation of simulation data into executable workflows.

    • Architected a multi-agent system using LangGraph and LangChain, designing the agent communication protocol to support iterative collaboration between specialized agents’ architecture.

    • Managed cloud deployment using AWS EC2, S3, and RDS, ensuring scalability, fault tolerance, and secure orchestration across backend services and AI pipelines.

    • OUTCOME: Currently, SimGenie has doubled developer productivity, enabling each VR developer to create 10+ simulations daily compared to ~5 before.

  2. Student Web Developer

    Jan 2025 — June 2025

    • Led a team and partnered with a local startup in designing the overall architecture of a full-stack social networking web app using Django, Next.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, and AWS services for scalable and maintainable development.

    • Implemented secure user authentication with Google reCAPTCHA and encrypted credentials and deployed the system using AWS Amplify and EC2 for reliable cloud hosting.

    • Integrated LLM to deliver AI-driven user support and content filtering, enhancing overall user engagement and experience.

  3. Student Web Developer in Texera

    June 2023 — April 2025

    • Designed and implemented user interfaces for Admin User Control and Dataset Environment (integrating Git for source control).

    • Helped Manage workflow execution by implementing scheduling strategies and worker node selection in Kubernetes, ensuring efficient resource utilization and high availability of distributed workloads.

    • Improved workflow interface usability by refactoring frontend components in Angular, enabling draggable, resizable, and collapsible panels. Increased available workspace by 30-40%, enhancing user productivity and interaction efficiency.

    • Enhanced user experience by 30% by implementing an efficient runtime dataset statistics calculation in Scala and frontend statistics display using stream processing. Achieved a 25% reduction in processing time through optimized parallel programming and concurrency management.

    • Optimized backend SQL queries using JOOQ to retrieve resource monitoring data efficiently, reducing query execution time from over 60 seconds to under 30 seconds (a 60%+ improvement), enhancing system responsiveness and user experience.

    • Currently implementing File Service System using LakeFS and S3 compatible storage to ensure dataset versioning and files uploading/retrieving/downloading efficiency.

  4. Algorithm Intern

    June 2024 — September 2024

    • Finetuned LLAMA 3.1 70b model using RLHF. Preprocessed data, achieving a 98% data quality validation rate and ensuring readiness for training. Participated in training the reward model, resulting in a 15% improvement in accuracy and enhancing its effectiveness in evaluating the model during the PPO process.

    • Developed and designed a slides generation workflow using LangChain and RAG, leveraging GPT models to analyze user inputs and automatically extract content from PDFs and URLs, and generating detailed slides and notes in 5 minutes.
